Waves

Reflection

In Waves I lined a 20’x12’ room with agricultural polyethylene sheeting, and then filled this liner with roughly 600 gallons of water. Low frequency transducers were affixed to XPS foam blocks and floated on the water. When these blocks were driven near their resonant frequencies, they began to create cymatic patterns on the surface of the water. To view the installation one would step into the pool, allowing them to see, hear, and feel the vibrations in the water. This was intended to guide the viewer to recognize that air is a fluid just like water, and life as we know it exists at the bottom of an ocean of air we call the atmosphere.

My next installation was Refelction. In this piece i would try to accentuate the cymatic patterns on the surface of the water with illuminated forms. I constructed a small pool and hung LED neon from an armature above it. This allowed for far clearer viewing of the intricate cymatic patterns in the water. To accompany this form I also hung many cables and tubes from the ceiling to introduce some context and uncertainty .
